Good Vibes Only

Clubbing and bar hopping got old to me really fast. Even years after realizing I outgrew it, I would still go, because that's what the people I hung out with did on the weekends. It may not seem like a legit reason, but I'm just being honest. At one point it was so uncomfortable, you know, to be so outside of my element in dark swanky bars and suffocating clubs, but liquor makes everything better for a moment, right? I ignored the pain and drowned my conscious thoughts in full bottles, feeling empty. The return home was always my most cherished part of the night. I took off my clothes, took off my mask, and laid right next to a dog that, even now, seems to understand me better than humans do most days.

As of lately, I find comfort in saying 'no'. At times I feel bad about it, because those "friends" take my rejection to invites personally. However, I'm learning more each day how to be true to myself, which means not filling my space and time with things that aren't aligned with who I am anymore. The individuals who fail to understand are probably the ones who aren't growing with me. I do understand that we all progress at different paces, but I can't allow other people to keep me where they are. I just have to move forward and pray that the ones who are stagnant find the motivation to do that as well, with or without me.

It's Saturday 3:42 am. I'm not out roaming the streets, in search of a new 'move' to fulfill my drunken desires to keep partying on the "scene" or wrapping my intelligence and my value around a man who has nothing to offer me, except a cheap drink. I am in my pajamas in the same place I have been most of yesterday. When I did leave the house, it was to spend quality time with my mother. There is nothing wrong with partying or being social with good company, but I have no interest in it on a level outside of celebrating life and all the major and minor successes of myself and others. I don't like the thought of being at the same old bar, around the same blinded people, but I do like it here, where my silence, my presence, are appreciated. I am not bored with my own company and certainly no longer seek validation from my peers.

What a complete 180...

Soundtrack Saturdays: Vol. 80 {Good Vibes Only.}

Whenever my mellow mood kicks in, it doesn't always fade within a week.  To get my day started, I typically find something upbeat, but it's a cadence when I settle home in the evenings, lol. I can stay on that musical cloud for a while, never caring to come down from the natural high it gives me, because it is just so zen and tranquil there. And this play list is not just for relaxation; it also ties into what I listen to in order to focus while I'm studying and gets my creative juices flowing when I'm creating or working on a project. So, I created a GOOD VIBES ONLY. playlist to compliment this peaceful experience with downloadable links for some of the tracks!

{And to interrupt your regularly scheduled program, Beyoncé's visual album was released on iTunes this week on 12.13.13. Boss.}
  1. Only One x Baptiste Trotignon & Mark Turner
  2. Nothing in This World (Tajan Mashup) x Drake + KeKe Wyatt [download]
  3. Turn Your Lights Down Low x Etienne Charles
  4. The Vapors x Jhene Aiko
  5. Trust x Robert Glasper, Marsha Ambrosius
  6. Reason to Live x Brooke Alford
  7. St. Tropez x Intended Immigration [download]
  8. Lesson x Eddie Moore & the Outer Circle
  9. No Time x Hayden James
  10. Be Bad x Luke James
  11. Butterfly x Lenny Kravitz
  12. Doing it Wrong x Drake
  13. Fall in Love x GDNA [download]
  14. Calls x Robert Glasper, Jill Scott
  15. Window Seat x Erykah Badu
  16. Young & Foolish x Bill Evans (Philippe Edison Remix)
Completely separate from this list, but still fitting with the uplifting-my-spirit theme, I've started my morning off with this powerful song, as a prayer. Earlier, a good friend of mine recommended that I meditate on it for a little while. It almost brought me to tears, because, unbeknownst to her, the lyrics are a reflection what my own prayers and journal entries have been saying lately:

"...Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever you will call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior..."

Currently.

Inspired by The Indie Byline

♥In Lust with:  his ambition. That's all I can say for now. = )

 Obsessing over: Christian rap music. Lately, I've fallen into a heavier gravitation towards conscious rap. Christianity and a higher truth through lyrics is something that I strongly believe hip-hop is in dire need of, not just for the sake of subconsciously saving souls, but mainly for the younger generation to have something positive to listen to. And it's not just for Christians...it's just about being open to hearing a great message through mainstream music; music that doesn't just sound good, but feels good also. Believe it or not, what we allow into our spirits affects us in some way or another, so it's important to use discernment in everything.

♥ Working On:  mentally preparing myself for classes next semester, by staying abreast by studying ahead. Head in the books.  Also, less promoting, more doing is the business lesson of the day.  The magazine not where I need it to be yet, so it's still very conceptual, however, a constant work in progress. Oh, and Vlogmas videos daily, until 12.25.13!

 Favorite Words: Namaste (the universe/divinit in me honors the universe/divinity in you). Agape (unconditional love). Serendipity (finding something good without looking for it). These are indefinitely more than just words; they are also lifestyle choices.

 Favorite Visual:   Winter nights in the city around Christmas time. It's absolutely magical. I feel this way every year, never fails.

 Favorite Sound: "Hang on the mistletoe, I'm gonna get to know you better/ This Christmas..." on the radio.

♥ Anticipating : Flying into the new year on a strong and positive note + fromawildflower, presented by KL // launch: 01.01.14

 Thinking about:  Planning ahead for the possibility of a New Year in another country next year.  Although NYC would be ideal for NYE celebration, I think I'm just going to do the low key thing at home and church this year.

 Over the Moon aboutGetting back in school.  I mentioned this in a recent vlog that I've taken so much time off from undergrad, it's ridiculous. Now, with a new school and a new major, it's like I'm getting a fresh new start and I'm so grateful for that opportunity to do so.  Knowledge is power.

 Dreaming OfAchieving all the grand scale goals I've set out for myself. What a beautiful day that will be...

Soundtrack Saturdays: Vol. 79 {A.M. Motivation}

All week, my mornings have started with me blasting Church Clothes 2, the second sequence to the Church Clothes mix tapes by Christian rapper known as Lecrae. Further learning about his testimony, after being recently introduced to his music, was just the icing on the cake. The gospel in his message has been delivered in such an unconventional way and throughout his career, he's made a solid name for himself in hip-hop. Because I am a super late bandwagon fan, I didn't want to do a full review of this LP, however, it did motivate me to create a short playlist of [mostly Lecrae] positive, uplifting songs to set an awesome tone for a busy day, in honor of a new generation of gospel music. I also get so much energy from dub step, electronic music, and pop/club dj mixes, but I'll be doing a separate Soundcloud playlist for that later on.
  1. I'm Turnt x Lecrae
  2. Round of Applause x Lecrae (B.o.B.)
  3. My Whole Life Changed x Lecrae
  4. Movin' x Ordinary Dreamers
  5. I'm Rooted x Lecrae ft. Derek Minor
  6. Ayo x Andy Mineo
  7. So Glad x Isaac Carree (ft. Kirk Franklin, Keirra Sheard, & Lecrae)
What songs motivate you in the a.m.?

Legendary Mandela

{Original work by Patrice Murcia}
It's impossible to really put into words the admiration and respect I will always hold for this man. Nelson Mandela's life was a testimony of living on purpose to make a positive difference in the world and an absolute reflection of both eternal and internal peace. His impact and humility has yet to be measured or understood, but it will certainly be in years to come. My dad has taught me about him my whole life and after reading his autobiography (twice), I gained so many life altering perspectives about who he was and everything he stood for. Not only did he preach on forgiveness, liberation, and solutions through peace and understanding, there is so much to learn from the life he actually led. In his fight to unite Africa, he will always be apart of uniting all nations. History books must now be re-written to acknowledge such a notable man who undoubtedly fulfilled his God-given purpose here on earth; he's more than an international icon, much more than a global humanitarian, and his legacy will live on forever.

Agapé: The Family Circle

Every year since 1971, we've had a family reunion at Thanksgiving time. People can say what they want about the holiday itself, but for my family, it's a huge deal. For our ceremonial dinner, I was asked to present an occasion speech, that basically explains why we gather and the purpose of the celebration. I don't think I've ever written anything more true and close to my heart as this open letter to my family.  After writing it, I realized how important it is for other families outside of my own to keep family first, above all things tangible, and second to God and faith.  Hopefully, it is received by you all in the way I intended it to be read and that all of you continue to experience a wonderful holiday season. Enjoy:

♥ ♥ ♥

Our reunion has stretched beyond the confines of simply being in the company of familiar faces. It has transformed into something bigger than the ceremonial traditions and good food. It's about love and creating a safe haven, a place where, no matter how far we go or how long we are away, we can freely return to the core of ourselves. It is our birthright to embrace that.

This family renuion is about building on the strong foundation pioneered by our forefathers and mothers. In order to grow stronger, there has to be a collective effort from a diverse tribe of beautiful individuals with unwavering roots.

Each one of us are fabricated by an awesome, supreme being and because of that, we are able to celebrate each other in a way that other families have yet to achieve in this lifetime. To believe that fortune is monetary is to not understand what it means to be truly prosperous.

Together, we applaud our accolades and lift each other up in times of struggle. Together, we seek the importance of growth and acceptance. Together, we successfully manifest the existence of a culture that works together in harmony to bring about a thriving community of truth speakers, innovators, and trendsetters budding with knowledge, love, and light.

As we habitually gather, let's not take for granted what a blessing it is to be present, to be surrounded by such a warm, close knit blanket of agapé (unconditional love), nor should we neglect every opportunity to distribute that love to our friends and guest, the honorary extensions of the family circle.

besos!
